City Hospital Conducts 23 Robotic Surgeries | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: City-based Ganga Hospital has performed total knee replacement (TKR) procedures on 23 patients within 12 days of acquiring VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution.
Chairman of the orthopaedic, trauma and spine surgery department at the hospital S Rajasekaran on Wednesday said the surgery for knee replacement has become advanced and successful with the help of the robot. “It is not that the robot can function without the intervention of doctors, but the system can help in effective planning and execution of surgery. The robot allows patient-specific personalised alignment and soft tissue balancing.”
Talking about knee replacement surgery, Rajasekaran said the lack of awareness about the procedure is leaving arthritis patients disabled over time. “There are roughly about 60 to 80 lakh people in the country, who are in dire need of knee replacement surgery, but only a small number of them are undergoing it, because of limited awareness about the subject.”
The whole procedure, costing somewhere around 2.5 lakh, is covered under the Union government’s Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and the state government’s Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. After the surgery, patients can walk normally within two months, after undergoing rehabilitation courses.
Sandeep Makkar, managing director of Johnson and Johnson MedTech India, said intervention of technology during the surgery can reduce human error. “With world-class training tools, including virtual reality, and data-driven technologies, we can ensure personalized care for patients, not just in metro cities, but also in tier-two and three cities,” he added.TNN
