Man attacked, robbed of car in Coimbatore | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: A car accessories shop owner in Coimbatore was assaulted by two men, who approached him on the pretext of buying an old car, and drove away the vehicle on Wednesday evening.
B Venkatesh, 30, of Vetri Vinayagar Kovil Street in Ganapathy Maa Nagar, has been running a car accessories shop adjacent to his residence for the last two years. He was planning to sell his 2005 model car and posted the vehicle details on online marketplace OLX in December last year.
Around 2pm on Wednesday, Venkatesh received a phone call from an unidentified man who told him that he was from Mettupalayam. The man told him that he was planning to buy an old car and wanted to see the car.
Venkatesh asked them to visit his home to see the car. Two men came to his residence on a motorcycle. They wanted to test drive the car.
“I travelled with them for at least one km. They showed an interest in buying the car. However, one of the men told me that he wanted to get a final confirmation from his brother who was in Prozone Mall near Saravanampatti. I drove the car towards the mall from my residence. One of the men sat on the rear seat while the other man sat on the front passenger seat,” said Venkatesh.
When the car reached at least 300 metre away from his residence, the man who was sitting on the rear seat started to attack him with a sharp weapon on his neck and right cheek. “After the assault, I opened the door and jumped out of the car. However, the man who was sitting on the front passenger seat, occupied the driver’s seat and drove the car away,” said Venkatesh.
Locals took him to a private hospital where four sutures were given to him on the neck. He alerted the Saravanampatti police who launched a vehicle check. However, the police were not able to trace the two men.
Some people in Kovilpalayam market suffered minor injuries when the duo drove the car in a rash and negligent manner.
Saravanampatti police inspector R Senthilkumar registered a case against the two men under sections 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code. The police have formed two special teams to nab the duo.
