Middlemen siphon off commission in procurement of sugarcane in Tamil Nadu: EPS | Chennai News

CHENNAI: AIADMK interim general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday charged that middlemen were siphoning off commission in the procurement of sugarcane and hence farmers were not getting the price promised by the government.
In a statement, he said following protests by farmers, the government had announced that sugarcane would be included in the Pongal gift hamper and that it would be procured at Rs 33 per piece. It was to be supplied free of cost to 2.2 crore ration card holders. The government had also announced that Rs 72 crore was allocated for procurement of sugarcane.
But in reality, farmers were being paid Rs 15-18 only per piece, he said. He charged that officers and middlemen were hand-in-glove in siphoning off commissions at the cost of farmers. He demanded that the government step in immediately and stop the loot.
