Convicted prisoner escapes from fuel station in Coimbatore | Coimbatore News



COIMBATORE: A convicted prisoner, who was working at the fuel station run by the Prisons Department on Bharathiyar Road in Coimbatore city, managed to escape around 5.30 am. The city police have formed two teams to trace him.
The prisoner has been identified as S Vijay Rathinam, 32, from Gudalur in the Nilgiris district.
Police said, he was convicted for ten years rigorous imprisonment by a sessions court in 2019 for his involvement in connection with a POCSO (protection of chilren from sexual offences) Act case.He had been spending his days behind the bars at the Coimbatore Central Prison.
The prison authorities have been running fuel stations in the name of Freedom on Dr Nanjappa Road and Bharathiyar Road adjacent to the Gandhipuram town bustand. The prison authorities assessed the good conducts of the convict prisoners and deputes Vijay Rathinam at one of the fuel stations on Bharathiyar Road.
Vijay Rathinam had chosen night shift from 10 pm to 6 am amd he had been working ay three fuel station a few months ago. On Sunday, other convict prisoners come to the fuel station to start their morning shifts and didnot find the convict prisoner Vijay Rathinam. They alerted the Coimbatore Central Prison officials who launched a search and were not able to trace the whereabouts of thr prisoner.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that the convict prisoners who were deployed for work at the fuel stations, used to go backside of the station for smoking. So other convict prisoners who were working at the fuel station, did not notice suspect Vijay Rathinam.
Kattoor police in Coimbatore city were alerted by the prison authorities and the police searched all thr bus stands,railway stations in the city to trace the whereabouts of Vijay Rathinam. The police have formed two special teams to trace the prisoner.
