Maharashtra: Tata Power’s old 500 MW unit at Trombay to continue supply | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Looking into rising power supply needs of Mumbai, the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has given a five-year extension to Tata Power‘s 930 MW plant at Trombay, which mainly supplies power to Mumbai, so as to enter into fresh power purchase agreements with the distributors.
This also includes Tata Power’s 36-year-old 500 MW coal-fired thermal set that was proposed to be phased out.
A power purchase term of a total of three sets here was scheduled to expire in March 2024.
Had the 500MW unit been phased out as per earlier order of MERC, it could have led to power shortage and affected the city’s islanding prowess in case of failure in the western or national grid, said experts.
The commission had earlier suggested that both sets of the 500 MW Trombay project and Adani Electricity’s 500 MW at Dahanu, which meet Mumbai’s average daily power demand of 3200 MW, should be phased out by increasing non-conventional energy sources.
Accordingly, the power purchase agreement from the three sets of 500 MW, 250 MW (combined gas and coal) and 180 MW wind-based at Trombay was applicable only till March 2024.
But all these three sets power BEST area along with Tata Power.
Apart from that, if there is a problem in the electricity coming to Mumbai from outside, these projects supply electricity to Mumbai through the ‘islanding’ system.
That is why the state government had also constituted a team to study whether these units can be phased out.
Tata Power had filed a petition in this regard with the Commission the order on which came today.
A capital investment of Rs 900 crore will be required to extend the time frame of all the three sets of the Trombay project.
That is why the company had requested in the petition that an extension of at least ten years should be given.
However, while extending the deadline for only five years, the Commission has ordered the company to enter into a long-term power purchase agreement separately for the purchase of power from Tata Power’s own hydroelectric plants at Bhira, Khopoli and Bhivpuri along with its three sets in Trombay.
Besides Tata Power’s own supply in Mumbai, ‘BEST’ buys power from Tata Power.
Out of the total 1197 MW electricity generated by Tata Power for Mumbai, BEST has reservation for 585 MW electricity (48.87 percent).
According to this, there is a possibility that “BEST” will also have to enter into a new power purchase agreement.
