NIA: NIA Gets Custody of 2 Arrested Suspects in Kovai Car Blast Case | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: The special court at Poonamallee dealing with the cases being probed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday granted custody of two suspects in the October 2022 car bomb blast case in the city to the NIA for six days for further investigation.
The NIA had earlier moved the special court in Chennai, seeking custody of Thaha Nazeer and I Mohammed Idris, who were arrested a few months ago in the car blast that occurred in front of Sangameswarar temple at Kottaimedu.
On Saturday evening, the court granted their custody to the investigation agency with a direction to produce them before it in the evening of December 8 (Friday). The two were subsequently brought to the temporary office of the NIA on the premises of the police recruits school in Coimbatore city the same night.
An NIA source said the two suspects were involved in the criminal conspiracy to execute the car bomb blast. “Inquiry with them may lead to a few more arrests in the case soon.”
While Nazeer, 27, son of Abdul Kadar of Madheena Avenue at Thirumarai Nagar in Podanur, was arrested last month, Idris, 25, of GM Nagar at South Ukkadam, was held in the case this August.
“A painter with the body shop of a car sales and service company, Nazeer had met the mastermind behind the blast, Jamesha Mubeen, 29, of Kottaimedu, at least three to four days prior to the blast. They talked for more than an hour at Mubeen’s rental house on HMPR Street, where the explosive materials were kept in carton boxes. Nazeer met Mubeen, who was killed in the incident, again at his residence a day before the car blast. We suspect that Nazeer knew about the car blast in advance,” the source said.
Idris, he said, was a close friend of Mubeen. “He too had participated in the criminal conspiracy. He has been under our radar for a while. We have collected solid evidence against him, including his call details for three years and statements from other arrested suspects in the case.”
So far, 14 people have been arrested in connection with the car bomb blast case.
