Thiruvananthapuram: Health minister Veena George has urged vigilance as there is a possibility of cholera spreading through contaminated water and food. The minister’s alert comes in the wake of a cholera case reported in the state capital.

The minister said special care should be taken, especially during the summer. If symptoms of cholera are observed, seek treatment immediately, she said. The main symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, muscle pain, and dehydration.

To prevent the disease, drink only boiled and cooled water, avoid stale food, wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before use, and maintain personal hygiene, she said.

George said following the confirmation of cholera in a deceased person in Thiruvananthapuram, the health department has taken strong measures.

No symptoms have been reported among the relatives or the hospital staff who treated the patient. Preventive medication has been provided to all of them, she added.
